When the world uses a search engine to ask questions about the greater Sacramento area and Northern California, what are they asking about? What are they finding?
If search engines are anything, they are living, breathing, real-time, public interest-polls.
A traditional market survey or opinion poll is based on “random” sampling of less than 2,000 people. Many of the polls and reports we see in the media are based on fewer than 1,200 individual’s answers, that are then “weighted” in such a way as to allow those opinions to supposedly represent a much larger group, say the nation’s voting adults, or a media company’s readers or listeners or viewers.
If the accepted statistical sciences logic that allows a few to “speak for” a vast many is sound (That is a big IF) how valuable might it be for Sacramento area business owners to know what the world is interested in when it comes seeking information about our region?
First the raw data…
Of these randomly selected areas, which was searched for the most often over the past 90 days?
- carmichael
- davis
- downtown sacramento
- elk grove
- folsom
- granite bay
- northern california
- placerville
- rocklin
- roseville
- sacramento
- west sacramento
Based our sampling of more than 300 million search records * (There are an estimated 40 Billion searches, monthly) it turns out, the most used geographic terms of the group above are:
- Sacramento
- Davis
- And Northern California
What is it search engine users are looking for information on when it comes to search queries that include these more popular regions?
“Sacramento”
Based on the Overture Keyword Selector Tool, for the past 30 days** (http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/) searchers wanted to know about The Bee, Craig’s List, Restaurants, The Kings and Real Estate…
- 48,973 sacramento bee
- 40,576 craigslist sacramento
- 29,311 restaurant sacramento
- 21,701 sacramento kings
- 12,900 sacramento california real estate
They were also very interested in
- Hotels
- Apartments
- & Home Loans.
Kind of makes sense for one of the hottest growth market in the country and the state capital…Huh? Travel, temporary housing, real estate.
“Davis”
The top 5 for the word “davis” alone, was a little non-geo specific…
Refining the search to include “ca” gave us this;
· 4996 university of california davis
· 3890 davis ca
· 1310 davis california apartment rental
· 853 davis california real estate
Kind of makes sense for a town known world wide for its university.
“Northern California”
- 6493 california northern
- 4170 california map northern
- 2398 california northern ride train
- 2296 california estate northern real
- 964 bed breakfast california northern
- 782 association california golf northern
- 718 california district northern
- 714 california casino northern
Expanding the region to be more California specific and less Sacramento or other city specific, takes us down a more travel and tourism road. Again, in a broad stroke overview sense, makes logical sense.
Being that this is a business magazine, and businesses are interested in getting more business, let’s see who is reaping the rewards of these qurries when the world’s most used search engine is used for a few of these terms…
When we asked Google (Non Paid) to tell us what it thought were the most important web sites about Sacramento, it told us this…
There are 193,000,000 web pages Google has indexed, that mentiones Sacramento.
Google values the web sites of
- Our local city government above all others, www.cityofsacramento.org
- Followed by this city’s daily newspaper, www.sacbee.com
- Our university’s site, www.csus.edu,
- and the Sacramento county government site, www.saccounty.net
(Snore……..How “traditional” of you Goo!)
I noticed that among all three geo-referances, real estate was common. So Google, what do you have to say about “sacramento real estate”
Shazam! Something VERY Interesting…
Where as local real estate information in past searches has been dominated by local media company results, not so much the case today…
For the first time ever, a new species of search engine results has been discovered by this humble internet marketing adventurer…
Google is now in the game. Ever heard of Google Base? It is what many think will come to represent the final nail in the daily newspaper classified business, and it is dominating my local Google search results page with pictures and full MLS-like “homes for sale” information. The data I am viewing appears to be exclusively from HomesandLand.com.
The next listing is sacmetro.com.
Followed by not so distant past front-runner, sacbee.com.
On a side note,
The following area businesses appeared in the paid side (Sponsored Links) of this search as well,
·
www.californiamoves.com
- Sacramento.HomesSearchUSA.com
- www.e-ListState.com
- Sacramento.Home-Listings.org
- www.teammichael.net
A strong indication that someone indeed is finding value in this data, as it appears that to own the higher ranking positions for this particular search string will cost these advertisers between $4.79 – and $6.63 per lead.
Many eyes are upon the Sacramento Valley. How will you monetize that interest?
* Based on the number of times these keyword(s) have been typed into the search boxes of the engines that Wordtracker gets its data from in the last 90 days. The Wordtracker Database comprises over 300 million searches carried out at MetaCrawler.com and DogPile.com.
